Blogging in the age of AI

Blogging Tips of the Week:

AI Has Changed Blogging Forever
(And That's Actually Amazing News)

Brought to you by Travelpayouts

AI has completely transformed the blogging landscape. We all know that.

And if you've been following along in blogging communities lately, you've probably heard people saying this change is terrible. That AI is ruining everything. That it's the death of authentic content.

I've also seen bloggers panic because Mediavine has taken a hard stance against AI-generated content. They've made it clear if your content is primarily AI-written, you're off their platform.

But here's what I think everyone is missing...

AI hasn't changed blogging for the worse. It's changed it for the BETTER.

Let me explain what I mean.

The Truth About AI and Blogging

Yes, Mediavine doesn't want AI-generated content on their network.

But that doesn't mean you can't use AI tools as a blogger (I know this because Mediavine told me directly at a small mastermind I was invited to in Chicago a few weeks ago).

There's a massive difference between:

  • Letting AI write your entire blog post ❌
  • Using AI to help you create BETTER content faster ✅

The key is understanding that AI should enhance your human expertise, not replace it.

Here’s another way to think about it that completely changed my perspective…

..a professional photographer doesn't stop being an artist when they use Photoshop to enhance their photos. The tool makes their work better, but the creative vision, the eye for composition, the storytelling.. It’s still 100% human.

The same principle applies to blogging.

I'll break down how I'm doing this, but if you want the full playbook, Travelpayouts just dropped a free guide that goes way deeper than what I can cover here.

--> You can read Travelpayouts' full guide about blogging with AI here.

3 Ways AI Makes My Content Better

1) AI Handles the Grunt Work, I Handle the Creativity

For starters, I write my content based on my own experiences and knowledge.

Like that time I got caught in a cyclone in New Zealand (zero stars, would not recommend), or when I found a hidden waterfall in Montenegro that wasn’t on any map, or that unforgettable night in Thailand when I learned which street food stalls to avoid… the hard way.

These stories are all mine. AI helps me organize and speed things up, but the voice, the stories, and the actual value are all me.

But now I can take my rough draft and polish it into something more readable and well-structured.

2) I Automate the Stuff That Wastes My Time

I wouldn’t mention this if I didn’t actually find it useful, but Travelpayouts recently put out a free guide (linked above) on using AI for blogging, and it gave me several “oh, duh” moments.

Not in a “robots are taking over” kind of way, but more like, “why have I been doing all this manually for so long?”

The guide walks through a ton of surprisingly helpful ways AI can support your blog, way beyond just helping you write.

Think things like:

  • Turning blog posts into social content or videos in a few clicks
  • Suggesting (or automating) where to place affiliate links
  • Personalizing your blog layout based on who’s reading
  • Predicting which topics are about to trend so you’re not always scrambling to keep up

It made me realize how much time I’ve been spending on little tasks that could have easily been offloaded with AI.

If you’re a busy blogger (and in my case, also chasing around a one-year-old baby), this kind of AI support can help lighten the load without losing your voice or control.

3) AI Makes Me More Strategic with Content Creation

When I let AI handle the stuff that should be automated, I actually have more energy for the creative parts that matter like crafting better content for my readers, promoting it in smarter ways, and growing my income without burning out.

Instead of spending hours trying to figure out what’s working or what to focus on next, AI helps me:

  • See which posts are performing best
  • Spot easy content gaps I can fill
  • Repurpose one strong blog post into multiple formats without starting from scratch

It’s not about replacing you as a human, it’s about giving yourself a break so you can focus on the stuff only you can do.

Ultimately, the bloggers who thrive will be the ones who use AI to amplify their strengths, not replace them.

So, What Does Mediavine Really Mean About No AI Websites?

When Mediavine says no AI content, they're talking about lazy, generic posts that sound like they were churned out by a robot.

They want to protect their advertisers from low-quality content. Obviously a smart move.

Using AI to enhance your work, while keeping your voice and expertise, isn’t the problem. And that’s not what anyone’s worried about.

The Limitations of AI

Now, before we all start bowing down to the AI gods.. let’s be real.

AI is not some all-knowing, infallible source of truth. It’s built entirely on human-generated content. That means it can’t create anything truly new. It can only remix and repackage what’s already out there.

Essentially, if human-created content were to disappear tomorrow, AI would stop being useful pretty fast. It relies on us to keep the internet alive and evolving. Without your stories, your data, your first hand experience, it’s just an empty shell.

And most importantly, people don’t trust AI. And truthfully, they shouldn’t.

I can’t tell you how many projects I’ve worked on using AI that totally bombed. The information it gave wasn’t just off, it was laughably wrong.

So yeah, use AI. It would be a little silly not to. But use it with your eyes open. It’s a tool, not a brain. And it’s only as good as the human behind it.

Important head's up -->Travelpayouts’ AI tools are getting a major upgrade this July. So, if you haven't signed up for Travelpayouts yet (it's completely free), do it now so you’re the first to know when it drops.

Blogging Tips of the Week: How I Monetized An Email List of 116 People A few months ago, my husband and I thought it would be a fun project to start a very niche newsletter and website for a neighborhood near where we live. We figured we'd share local updates, community events, and just help neighbors stay connected. Within 6 weeks, I'd monetized our tiny email list and we're already profitable. You might be thinking: "Yeah right.. you need thousands of subscribers to make money from email...

In 2018, Mike and I decided to start traveling full-time. At that point, I had already spent a few years bouncing around: teaching English in Thailand, backpacking through Europe on a budget, and living out of a campervan in New Zealand. So going full-time wasn’t a huge stretch. What made it possible was teaching English online with VIPKID (they’re hiring again, by the way). I was pulling in around $2,500–$3,000/month, which was enough to fund our life in places like Southeast Asia and...
